OnPage SEO – Enhance Your Website With This OnPage SEO Checklist

Onpage SEOLet’s start by explaining what the term OnPage SEO is all about. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and means just what it sounds like, optimising our websites in such a way that they appear in the search engines. This usually means extra visitors, extra traffic to our websites, so it is vitally important.

There are two stages of SEO, referred to as OnPage and OffPage. OnPage SEO has to do with keywords, title, description, all the elements that go into each page or post before it gets published. OffPage SEO is all about the activities that take place afterwards, such as methods of promoting the website, like back-linking. They can be considered as before and after strategies.

OnPage SEO is the focus of this article. There are certain actions proposed here that you should try to incorporate into every article that you post.

If you already have a website, you might be wondering, what about all the previously published articles on my website? The answer is yes, you can go ahead and edit some or all of those also, and then republish them. You don’t have to do them all, and you don’t have to do them all at once. Why not set aside some time each week to go through some of them.

If you make use of tracking software, this will help to point out your pages that are getting very little activity, and you can focus on these. If you are wondering whether you should also do this for your ‘good’ pages, my preference is to leave those well and truly alone, don’t break them (add more pages related to those keywords instead).

Tip: Make sure you have tracking software in place. Google Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics can be used free of charge and provide great statistics and information about your site.

Here is the OnPage SEO checklist that you can use, all using no-cost methods.

Keyword Phrase: Always have one main keyword phrase for each article. If you have a title, or an idea, but no keyword phrase, then use some tools to help you. Use the free Google Adwords Keyword Tool to help you decide. This will show you how popular each keyword phrase is, with details of how many people search for that phrase each month. This tool alone will not really help you with the competitiveness of each keyword, but it shows you which ones to avoid.

While doing this, also be on the lookout for keyword variations, and make a note of them. These are keyword phrases which are very similar to your own, just phrased slightly differently (such as “SEO Information” and “Information about SEO”). I will explain how to make use of them further down.

Title: Put your keyword within the title of your article. If you can, put it in there twice, for example “OnPage SEO – Enhance Your Website With This OnPage SEO Checklist”.

Article Length: I am including this point because it is becoming more obviously important to have articles longer than 500 words. Aim for 1000 words or more each time, with a minimum of 750.

Article Body: Try to have your keyword in the opening paragraph and in the closing paragraph (or first and last fifty words). Scatter your keyword throughout the body of the article. Expert recommendations vary here, often saying to try to include it in the region of 1.5% to 2% overall. My preference is not to look at percentages, as a well written article handles that by itself.

Emphasis: Try to have one occurrence each for your keyword of bold, underline, and italics.

Headings: Try to have your keyword in H1, H2, and H3 headings when possible. Normally your WordPress theme will turn your article title into an H1 heading, and personally I try never to have more than one H1 heading per page.

Outbound Links: Link out to an authority site using your keyword as the anchor-text, and make this link Nofollow. Pages in About.com or Wikipedia.com are suggestions to use here, since they include just about every topic.

Internal Links: Try to link back to your homepage from every article using your keyword as the anchor-text, maybe by including “Check out my homepage for this great offer…” or something like that. Try to include some links to other article pages also, from within the body of your article (in addition to any sidebar lists such as Recent Articles). SEO Smart Links is a great plug-in that can take care of all your internal linking requirements.

All-In-One SEO Plugin: Make sure you have this WordPress plug-in installed. This provides a form that you can fill out for every article and includes title, description, and keywords.

  • Title: This is the page title, as distinct from the article title (this title is the one that appears along the top of the web browser). Include your keyword at least once.
  • Description: Include your keyword at least once.
  • Keywords: Always include your keyword exactly once, and include any keyword variations here also

Include an Image: Try to include an image such as clip-art or a photo in every post. Rename the image to include your keyword in the image file name. Also put your keyword into the description and into the ‘alt-tag’ of the image.

That concludes the OnPage SEO checklist section. When those are completed, review your page and take the following into consideration.

Mix It Up: Note how I did not say ‘always’ for most of these points. If you follow the exact same formula on every article, it might look a bit suspicious and can get noticed by Google. Try using keyword variations instead of the actual keywords sometimes.

Remember The Readers: Implementing all these OnPage SEO tips can greatly attract visitors to your website. Just remember that these same points can drive them away again just after they arrive. Too many headings, too much use of bold and emphasis can make your page look ridiculous unless you are careful.

Guest Posting – Boost Your Readership With This Free Method

Here is the summary of how it works: Write an article and then give it away to another blog owner. When the article gets published on the other blog, those other readers will see your name and also they will see links to your site. Here is a bit more detail on this method of guest posting on blogs. First you have to find other blogs or websites that you can submit to. Obviously these must be related to the theme of your own website. Finding some should not be too difficult. You will probably be aware of lots of other sites already, since the time when you were doing research for your own website. You can find many others just by searching for them. To do this, go to your favourite search engine and type something like the following into the search box:

“keyword” + intitle:”guest contributor”
“keyword” + intitle:”guest post guidelines”

Replace the word “keyword” with your own. For example, if I was searching for places where I could guest post, I might try:

“earn extra money” + intitle:”guest contributor”

You can try using various other phrases after the word intitle, such as ”write for us”, ”submit your contribution”. Play around with it, and you should find a group of suitable websites with not too much effort.

Increase Website Traffic – Part Two

If you build it, they just might come, so try to hold on to them!

I mentioned a few points in the last article on how to increase website traffic, and today we will be looking at some more. Here’s a link to that last article for your convenience increase website traffic.

First I want to make it clear that the items mentioned n the last article are all items that should be seen to before your website goes live to the public. The reason for the distinction is simply this, failure to check and fix all those items will have the effect of driving away traffic from your website.

When you drive away traffic for any of those reasons, its very unlikely that they are going to come back any time in the future. Well, yes it is possible that they would, but there is absolutely no reason for you to risk losing them in the first place.

Increase Website Traffic – Part One

For everybody who has a website, the goal is to get visitors coming into that website. Those visitors are known as traffic. This is the first of a series of posts all about fundamentals of how to increase website traffic. Methods and tactics that can be used to get that traffic started, and once started, how to increase traffic to your website as time goes on.

Today we will be looking at the foundation of the website. When you built your website, you either took your time and poured your heart and soul into it, or else threw it up in a hurry. Of course its also possible that you purchased the website from somebody else, or hired an outside body to build it for you based on your instructions.

Whichever way it happened, you are left with a website that you think is ready, just like a new store about to open its doors for the first time. At this point many website owners are already thinking of how to increase website traffic, but have you examined the website properly? There are a number of things that you must check, so lets get started.

The overall appearance: Your website might look beautiful in your eyes, but how about from the eyes of other people? Have you asked any? You should. Always try to get some extra opinions from other people. They will tell you what they think of the style, the use of colours, the placement of objects, the overall appearance. Maybe that purple colour that you love so much is considered an eyesore to others. Be careful though, try not to ask just everyone, it is better if you can get opinions from other professionals in the internet world, as they will have more valid observations based on personal experience. A nice appearance always helps to increase website traffic.

The purpose of your website: From the point of view of a visitor to your site, is it clear what your website is trying to achieve? Is it consistent? For example, a visitor to this website might see an article about YouTube videos, and next an article about a plug-in called Akismet. Its very possible that the visitor could get confused and wonder what the website is all about. So we must ensure that the purpose of the website is made clear from several locations, such as the title of the website, the content of the homepage, the content of the About page, and any other relevant places. All these need to be consistent, so that the visitor has a clear idea of what is going on. If you have not checked all this already, the time to do it is now.

Navigation: Your visitors must have an easy way of looking around your website, without getting lost. A clear menu or navigation system must be in place, and must be easy to reach. Some websites are designed in a very clumsy manner where sometimes its not easy to find the way back to the homepage. This will drive away your visitors very fast. Remember that our goal is always to increase website traffic, not drive them away. Also ensure that there are no broken links in your website, i.e. if you have links that lead away to other different websites, makes sure that all these links are checked, and checked regularly. This is something that both visitors and Google hate.

Loading time: If your website is slow to load, that can be another cause of driving away your visitors. If this is the case, try to pinpoint the reason, and rectify it. Sometimes this can be caused by faulty plug-ins, sometimes by having too many images that are far too large, and various other reasons. If you cannot isolate the reason yourself, look for some help from a web designer or other professional. Most people just will not wait around for a slow site any more.

Multiple browsers: Make sure that you view your website from as many of the different internet browsers as possible. Each browser handles the display of web-pages slightly differently, and your website might look great in one browser, but completely garbled in another. Do your best to check against all the main browsers such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome, and any others that you can. Just because you yourself are in love with Opera does not mean that everyone else is, so you can often increase website traffic very efficiently with this single step.

Every one of the points mentioned above are tasks that must be checked before your website goes live to the public.
